Breastfeeding – The Side Effect Free Diet Drug (Well Almost)

Before I knew I was pregnant, I had always said that i would provide boob food for my little one, just not directly from me. I would happily instead provide my child with my substitute, a nice sterilized bottle. Besides these were my fun bags. Well at least mine and my husbands. But it’s not that kind of blog so where was I?

I was 39 weeks, 3 days on a Saturday.  I met my little man the following Sunday at 4 days past my due date.

Then I lamented and said that I would only breast feed the first few days so that he could receive the nutrient and antibody rich colostrum. But that all changed after enrolling in my Bradley Birth class. The Bradley Birth Method not only teaches the natural way of childbirth but also a natural approach to feeding your little one. So fast forward 7 months since my little dude has been born and I’ve been breast feeding all the way. And boy let me tell you, when they say breast feeding helps in the post baby weight loss (500 calories a day), it’s no joke!! Well that and eating healthy most of the time. I had only managed to work out a total of 5 times since giving birth up until 2 months ago(I know, sad considering I worked out while preggo) and I had dropped 2 pants sizes!!  Not that I didn’t want to work out because I really did, but honestly, most days I was either too exhausted, the hubby got home too late from the job or I just plain did not feel like it.  I know I could have worked out at home but since I was at home all day,  I really wanted to get out the house but I hadn’t renewed my gym membership.  I pay by the year and it just hadn’t been in the budget until now.

My largest pair of jeans (size 14 to be exact). Granted pants fit differently depending on the designer but still, twas not happy with that number.

Any who, what’s even more crazy is that I had been trying to lose an extra 30 lbs I had picked up over the last few years prior to pregnancy but could never lose more than a few of them and now more than half of that is gone. All in all I’ve lost the 22 lbs gained during pregnancy plus an additional 18 which leaves me 12 away from my goal weight.  Now that I am back in the gym (YES!!!) AND still breastfeeding, I will be bringing sexy back in no time!

Now I did say that breastfeeding was almost side effect free.  There are a few but minor effects that still make it worth it.  You could have a sore nipple or two due to your little one having an improper latch but that can be rectified with a visit(s) with a lactation consultant.  Then there is the possibility of mastitis, which is an infection caused by bacteria entering a crack or break in the skin or a plugged duct.  Both have symptoms similar in nature but don’t require much to get over them.  But come on! I consider those minor side effects compared to taking actual diet drugs that can go as far as kill you.  Umm….no thanks.  I kind of like being alive.

So ladies when the time comes, give booby feeding a try.  Not just for the health of your little one but also for your waistline.

Side note: Since originally drafting this post a few weeks ago, I have been hitting the gym pretty regularly, (3-4 times a week) and clean eating 75-85% of the time.  I’m trying to get that percentage up but my weakness is sweets, especially after the baby.  But I am down another 2 sizes. Whoopeeeee!!!!

Here is me today.  Who knew having a baby could do a body so good!!
